This old growth ponderosa pine tree often has many bird visitors I can see from my art studio window. It also houses a bat box: it’s residents can be spotted flying over our nearby pond at dawn feeding on the many insects attracted to the water. Below it our kids have their sandbox which often fills with its needles. The river’s current is a constant force which slowly carves its way to the ocean. The mountains, at a slow trickle, merge with the river to make new land farther south. The many alluvial fans in the area speak of the many ages this relationship has been taking place. Years of topsoil eroding from the mountains and potential river deposits left behind may be the reason why it is a great growing area. Also, the intense sunlight during the growing season really increases the rate of growth in a day. Our farm is on one of those mountain benches. Many agate hunters and driftwood collectors appreciate what the river brings. This landscape carries with it a lot of sedimentary deposits and benches with jagged mountains as back drops. You can never get board of the scenery while driving the Fraser Canyon, especially on Highway 12. Year round our mountain spring runs under the road and irrigates a large thicket of Red Osier Dogwood. In winter, the reds are a stunning contrast with the rest of the landscape. In summer, our children pause to drink directly from the spring here. I am so thankful that there are still areas in the world where you can drink from streams. The north/south facing canyon creates a sun drop which is one of the reasons this area is considered the hot spot of Canada in summer. All the sunlight funneled in really makes it glisten. For us northern canyoners, sun is often not plentiful in winter. On the shortest day of the year, during the Winter Solstice, we have two hours of direct light: which is why we live for those sunny seasons. In my mid 20’s, I drove the Sea to Sky and Fraser Canyon loop from Abbotsford and back with my mother. When we hit Highway 12, just after passing through the Duffy Lake Highway and Lillooet, I was taken aback by the spirit of the place: the bleached grasses swaying in the wind, the smell of the sage grass and pine woodland forests and the sound of the crickets singing somewhere in the warm sun. There is something about incredibly powerful about this physical place and its essence that I captured in this painting. Our wild area has many alpine mountain creeks that guide melting snow packs to the Fraser River and eventually the Pacific Ocean. The gorgeous sand deposits and incredible force can be felt where this creek joins the river. The passing of time and the river’s etch on the land is especially stunning in this particular area of the Fraser River’s Canyon. The loud rumble of the powerful Cat Creek, near Lillooet, B.C, can be heard all year long. The creek originates from the tall mountains that look over our farm and their snow packs, which, once melted, courses their way to the river. We came across the point where this creek finds the Fraser River. The beautiful sand deposits with mountain memories rippled in the sun. We lingered here for awhile and contemplated the cycle of this water and its journey: from snow pack, to creek, to river and even to the ocean, to evaporation and then to snow or rain once more.
